The idea in one minute

A browser is the client software that fetches and displays web pages: Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera. A search engine is a website that indexes the web and finds pages: Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo. (Google is NOT a browser; Chrome is NOT a search engine - the most repeated trap.)

A webpage is one document (HTML); a website is a collection of related pages; the home page is a site's opening page; a portal bundles services (news, mail, shopping). Pages are written in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and linked by hyperlinks.

Downloading = copying files FROM a server to your device; uploading = sending files FROM your device TO a server (e.g. attaching to e-mail, posting videos). Cookies are small text files a site stores in your browser (sessions, preferences, tracking); the cache keeps copies of pages/images for faster reloads.

Search tips: quotes "exact phrase", minus -exclude, site:ssc.gov.in restricts to a site, OR widens. Browser vs search engine — separate jobs

A browser is the program on your device that fetches and displays web pages: Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera (Internet Explorer is retired). A search engine is a website that indexes the web and finds pages for your words: Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo. Google is a search engine; Chrome is a browser; Chrome's address bar can USE Google. Exams love the swap: "Google is a browser — true or false?" False.

The browser's everyday tools

Cookies are not viruses — they are passive text files; the worry is privacy, not infection. Incognito / private mode opens a window that forgets history and cookies when closed — useful on shared computers. It does not make you anonymous to the websites or the ISP.

Downloading and uploading

Download = a file travels from a server to your device (songs, PDFs, apps). The browser's downloads list (Ctrl+J) tracks them; the Downloads folder stores them.
Upload = a file travels from your device to a server (attaching a form, posting a video).
Streaming = watching or listening as the data arrives, without saving the whole file first.

Using a search engine well

Type specific keywords, not full sentences; put quotes around words that must appear together ("solar mission"); a minus sign removes a word. Results mix ads, links, images and videos — the engine ranks pages by relevance, it does not check truth.

Method

Incognito/private windows forget history and cookies after closing — good for shared computers.
They do NOT hide you from websites, the office network or the ISP, and bookmarks you make stay.
Cookies cleared = stored logins lost in that window.

Browser = the car; search engine = the GPS you ask inside it. Chrome/Edge/Firefox/Safari/Opera = cars. Google/Bing/Yahoo/DuckDuckGo = GPS. If it is a program you install, browser; if it is a website you visit, engine.

Confusing Ctrl+H (history) with Ctrl+J (downloads) - H comes before J alphabetically: History before Downloads? No: History=H, Downloads=J is pure memory; the mnemonic is 'H = havens visited (history)'.

Mistake 03

Thinking cookies are viruses - cookies are passive text files (privacy issue, not malware).
