The idea in one minute

e-Banking/net banking = banking through the bank's secured website/app; mobile banking via apps; ATM (Automated Teller Machine) for cash, balance, mini-statement, PIN change.

Payment systems (NPCI - National Payments Corporation of India, 2008 - runs most retail rails):

SystemNatureKey facts
NEFTNational Electronic Funds TransferBatch/half-hourly settlement; no minimum; available 24x7 since Dec 2019
RTGSReal Time Gross SettlementMinimum Rs. 2 lakh; settles individually, real time; 24x7 since Dec 2020
IMPSImmediate Payment ServiceInstant 24x7 transfers via mobile/MMID; no RTGS-style minimum
UPIUnified Payments Interface (2016)Instant app-to-app transfer using a VPA (name@bank); 24x7; BHIM app; QR payments

Security tokens: IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) - 11 characters identifying the bank branch (e.g. SBIN0001234); MICR 9-digit cheque code; OTP (One Time Password) and 2FA (two-factor authentication: something you know + something you receive/are). Safety rules: banks NEVER ask for PIN/OTP/password; check https + padlock before paying; avoid public Wi-Fi for transactions; unknown links = phishing (see cyber-security topic).

01

Banking from a distance

e-Banking (net banking) = banking through the bank's secured website; mobile banking = the same through an app. The ATM (Automated Teller Machine) works round the clock for cash withdrawal, balance enquiry, mini statement and PIN change. All of them sit on the same idea: instructions travel over secure networks instead of paper slips at a counter.

02

The money-transfer rails of India

RailFull formStyle
NEFTNational Electronic Funds Transfermoves in batches (half-hourly slots); no minimum; 24x7 since 2019
RTGSReal Time Gross Settlementreal-time, transaction by transaction; minimum 2,00,000 rupees
IMPSImmediate Payment Serviceinstant, runs inside mobile/internet banking, 24x7
UPIUnified Payments Interfaceinstant app-to-app transfer by UPI ID or QR (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm); built by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India)

RTGS's rule is asked again and again: minimum 2 lakh rupees — NEFT has no minimum.

03

The codes on a cheque and beyond

CodeSizeJob
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code)11 charactersidentifies the exact bank branch for NEFT/RTGS/IMPS (e.g. SBIN0001234: 4 letters bank, 0, 6 characters branch)
MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition)9 digitsthe cheque number strip at the bottom; speeds cheque clearing
SWIFT—the code system for international wire transfers
04

Safety: OTP, PIN, CVV and two factors

  • PIN = Personal Identification Number (your secret at ATM/UPI); CVV = the 3-digit Card Verification Value printed on the card's back; OTP = One Time Password, valid for one login/transaction only.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) = password plus something else (OTP or fingerprint) — two locks instead of one.
  • Real banks never ask for PIN, OTP, CVV or passwords by phone, SMS or mail — any such caller is a fraudster. Report cyber-fraud on the national helpline 1930; IFSC-like codes should never be typed on a link received from a stranger.

Question types you will see

Each type: how to recognise it, the method step by step, and one question to try.

Type 1very common5 practice Q

NEFT / RTGS / IMPS / UPI comparison

How to spot it:

'Which rail has a minimum of 2 lakh', 'which is instant 24x7 by UPI ID', 'full form of NEFT/RTGS/UPI' — the rails' styles mixed in options.

Method
  1. NEFT = batches, half-hourly slots, NO minimum.

  2. RTGS = real-time gross settlement, minimum 2,00,000 rupees.

  3. IMPS = instant inside banking apps, 24x7.

  4. UPI = instant app-to-app by UPI ID or QR, built by NPCI.

  5. The recurring trap: giving NEFT the 2-lakh minimum (it belongs to RTGS).

Try this

A customer must transfer 25,00,000 rupees immediately, transaction by transaction. The suitable system is:

Show solution

RTGS — real-time, transaction-wise, built for high-value transfers (minimum 2 lakh).

Type 2very common5 practice Q

OTP, PIN, CVV and 2FA safety

How to spot it:

'Full form of OTP/CVV', 'a caller from the bank asks your OTP — what do you do', or which combination makes an e-transaction two-factor.

Method
  1. OTP = One Time Password — one transaction, one use, short life.

  2. CVV = Card Verification Value — the 3-digit number on the card's back.

  3. PIN = Personal Identification Number.

  4. 2FA = password PLUS OTP/biometric — two independent locks.

  5. Banks NEVER ask for OTP/PIN/CVV by call, SMS or mail — the asker is a fraudster.

Try this

A caller says he is from your bank and asks for the OTP that just arrived. You should:

Show solution

Refuse and disconnect — real banks never ask for OTPs; this is a vishing fraud attempt.

Type 3common4 practice Q

IFSC, MICR and SWIFT codes

How to spot it:

'IFSC has how many characters', 'which code is used for international transfer', 'the 9-digit code on a cheque is'.

Method
  1. IFSC = Indian Financial System Code, 11 characters — 4 letters (bank) + 0 + 6 (branch); used in NEFT/RTGS/IMPS.

  2. MICR = 9 digits, the magnetic-ink strip at the cheque's bottom.

  3. SWIFT = the code system for INTERNATIONAL transfers.

Try this

The number of characters in an IFSC code is:

Show solution

11 — e.g. SBIN0001234: SBIN (State Bank of India) + 0 + 001234 (branch).

Type 4common3 practice Q

ATM and net-banking basics

How to spot it:

'ATM stands for', 'which of these can be done at an ATM', 'mobile banking vs net banking' — service identification.

Method
  1. ATM = Automated Teller Machine — cash, balance, mini statement, PIN change, 24x7.

  2. Net banking = bank's website; mobile banking = bank's app.

  3. ATM transactions need the card + PIN; the PIN is never written on the card.

Try this

The full form of ATM is:

Show solution

Automated Teller Machine — the 24x7 machine for cash withdrawal, balance enquiry and mini statements.

Shortcuts that save time

⚡ NEFT vs RTGS

RTGS = Really To Go, in batches of one, 2 lakh+ (real-time, gross = one-by-one, big amounts). NEFT = Nice Easy Batches (settlement in half-hourly batches, any amount).

Example

Minimum amount for RTGS?

Show solution

Rs. 2 lakh.

⚡ IFSC 11

IFSC = 11 characters (4 bank code + 0 + 6 branch code), used on NEFT/RTGS/UPI branch routing. MICR is the 9-digit cheque strip.

Example

How many characters does an IFSC code have?

Show solution
⚡ 2FA two keys

Two-factor = password (know) + OTP/biometric (have/are). One stolen password is not enough - that is the whole point.

Example

Entering a password followed by an SMS OTP is an example of?

Show solution

Two-factor authentication.

07

Mistakes to avoid

Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.

Mistake 01

Giving NEFT the 2-lakh minimum - RTGS has it; NEFT has no minimum.

Mistake 02

Saying IMPS is only for banks abroad - IMPS is an Indian instant retail rail.

Mistake 03

Sharing OTPs on calls 'from the bank' - real banks never ask; that is vishing.

08

Quick revision

Read this the night before the exam.

  • NEFT = batches, no minimum; RTGS = real-time, minimum 2 lakh; IMPS/UPI = instant, 24x7; UPI by NPCI.

  • IFSC = 11 characters (branch identity); MICR = 9 digits (cheque strip); SWIFT = international.

  • OTP = one-time password; CVV = 3 digits on card back; 2FA = password + OTP/biometric.

  • Banks never ask for OTP/PIN/CVV; cyber-fraud helpline = 1930.
