File Explorer (Windows Explorer)File/folder management shell (Win+E)
Control Panel / SettingsSystem configuration (Settings app in Win 10/11)
Task ManagerProcesses, performance, startup (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
Recycle BinDeleted files held here; Shift+Delete skips it (permanent)
Device ManagerLists/controls hardware and drivers
Disk ManagementPartition, format drives; Disk Cleanup/Defragmenter utilities
Windows DefenderBuilt-in antivirus/firewall; Windows Update keeps patches current
Command Prompt / PowerShellCLI interfaces for typed commands
User accountsAdministrator vs Standard; login password/PIN
Virtual desktops / SnapMultiple desktops (Win+Ctrl+D); window snapping (Win+arrow)

01

What Windows is

Microsoft Windows is the world's most used desktop operating system: single-user, multitasking, GUI-based. Windows 10 arrived in 2015, Windows 11 in 2021. The desktop you see is the OS's graphical shell — behind it, the Windows kernel does the real work.

02

Feature table (each row is a one-mark question)

FeatureMeaning
GUIYou point and click on Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer (WIMP) instead of typing commands
MultitaskingMany programs run at once; the CPU switches between them so fast each seems continuous
Plug and Play (PnP)Connect new hardware and Windows detects and configures it automatically — usually no manual driver hunt
File managementFiles in folders, browsed in File Explorer
Recycle BinDeleted files land here first and can be restored; Shift+Delete skips it
User accountsSeparate login, password and personal folders per user
03

The Windows toolbox

ToolJob
Task ManagerShows running programs, 'not responding' apps, CPU/RAM use; start it with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
Control Panel / SettingsChange system settings — display, sound, users, network
Device ManagerLists all installed hardware and its drivers; flags problems
File ExplorerBrowse, copy, move, rename files and folders
Disk CleanupDeletes junk and temporary files
Disk DefragmenterReorganises scattered file pieces on hard disks
04

Built-in accessories (know which does what)

  • Notepad — plain text only: no bold, no pictures. Saves .txt.
  • WordPad — light formatting (bold, fonts) in rich text; between Notepad and MS Word.
  • Paint — simple drawing and image editing.
  • Calculator, Snipping Tool (screenshots) — small single-purpose apps.
05

The mobile half of the story

  • Android — owned and developed by Google; built on the Linux kernel; open source at its core (AOSP); runs on phones of many brands.
  • iOS / iPadOS — Apple's mobile OS; closed source; runs only on Apple devices.
  • Windows, macOS, Linux — the desktop trio; Android, iOS — the mobile duo.

Question types you will see

Each type: how to recognise it, the method step by step, and one question to try.

Type 1very common4 practice Q

Windows feature identification (GUI, multitasking, PnP)

How to spot it:

'The feature that auto-detects new hardware is', 'running many programs at once is called', 'WIMP stands for' — a feature name with four definitions.

Method
  1. Auto-detect + auto-configure hardware = Plug and Play.

  2. Many programs at once = multitasking; WIMP = Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer.

  3. Windows = single-user multitasking GUI OS — a three-label line exams quote directly.

Try this

The Windows feature that automatically detects and configures a newly connected USB device is —

Show solution

Plug and Play (PnP) — the OS identifies the device and loads a suitable driver without manual setup.

Type 2very common3 practice Q

Windows tool ↔ purpose matching

How to spot it:

'Which tool shows CPU/RAM usage or stuck programs?', 'where do you change settings?', 'which tool lists hardware and drivers?'

Method
  1. Processes and performance → Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Settings → Control Panel/Settings. Hardware + drivers → Device Manager. Files → File Explorer. Junk files → Disk Cleanup.

  2. 'Not responding' in the stem always points to Task Manager.

  3. Device Manager flags driver problems with warning marks.

Try this

A program has stopped responding. Which Windows tool lets you end it forcibly?

Show solution

Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) — select the app and choose End Task. It also shows CPU, memory and disk usage.

Type 3common2 practice Q

Windows accessories: Notepad / WordPad / Paint

How to spot it:

'Notepad saves files as…', 'which accessory draws pictures?', 'difference between Notepad and WordPad'.

Method
  1. Notepad = plain text (.txt), no formatting at all.

  2. WordPad = basic rich-text formatting; MS Word = full formatting.

  3. Paint = drawing; Snipping Tool = screenshots; Calculator = maths.

Try this

Which statement about Notepad is correct?

Show solution

Notepad is a plain-text editor — it saves .txt files with no formatting (no bold, fonts or images). WordPad adds basic formatting.

Type 4common3 practice Q

Mobile and desktop OS facts (Android, iOS, Linux)

How to spot it:

'Android is developed by…', 'Android is based on which kernel?', 'iOS runs on which devices?', 'which is open source?'

Method
  1. Android = Google, built on the Linux kernel, open source at its core, many brands.

  2. iOS = Apple, closed source, only Apple hardware.

  3. Desktop trio: Windows (Microsoft), macOS (Apple), Linux (open source, Linus Torvalds).

Try this

The Android mobile operating system is built on which kernel?

Show solution

The Linux kernel — Android is Google's mobile OS layered over Linux; that is why it is often called 'Linux-based'.

07

Shortcuts that save time

⚡ PnP = Plug 'n' Pray-free

Plug and Play means the OS auto-detects and auto-configures new hardware - no driver hunt. The phrase 'automatically detected' in a question = PnP.

Example

Windows feature that configures a newly attached printer automatically?

Show solution

Plug and Play.

⚡ Task Manager 3-2-Esc

Fastest route to Task Manager: Ctrl+Shift+Esc (direct). Ctrl+Alt+Del only opens the security menu first. 'Direct' is what SSC tests.

Example

Shortcut that opens Task Manager directly?

Show solution

Ctrl+Shift+Esc.

08

Mistakes to avoid

Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.

Mistake 01

Believing Recycle Bin catches everything - Shift+Delete bypasses it, and flash-drive deletes often skip it too.

Mistake 02

Confusing File Explorer (files) with Internet Explorer/Edge (browser).

Mistake 03

Thinking Notepad saves rich formatting - Notepad is plain text only.

09

Quick revision

Read this the night before the exam.

  • Windows = single-user + multitasking + GUI (WIMP). Win10 2015, Win11 2021.

  • Plug and Play = auto-detect and configure new hardware.

  • Task Manager = processes and 'not responding'; Device Manager = hardware and drivers; Control Panel = settings.

  • Notepad = plain text; WordPad = formatted text; Paint = drawing.

  • Android = Google + Linux kernel; iOS = Apple only.
