Synonyms & Antonyms
🔒 Log in to trackAntonyms: prefix flips and real opposites
🔒 Log in to trackAn antonym is a word opposite in meaning. Two skills cover SSC antonym questions.
Skill 1 — the opposite, not the absence. The correct antonym reverses the meaning; it does not merely differ. For BRAVE the antonym is cowardly, not careful. For PRAISE it is criticise, not ignore — ignoring is not the opposite of praising. Test each option by making a mini-sentence pair: 'He praised the plan / He criticised the plan' — clean contradiction.
Skill 2 — build the flip. Most adjectives flip with a prefix:
| Prefix | Effect | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| un- | not / reverse | unfair, unwell, undo, untie |
| in- / im- / il- / ir- | not | inactive, impossible, illogical, irregular |
| dis- | opposite, apart | disagree, disorder, disconnect, discredit |
| non- | not | nonsense, nonstop, nonviolent |
| mis- | wrongly | misjudge, misplace, misinterpret |
| de- | down, reverse | decrease, deflate, decompose |
| anti- | against | antisocial, antidote, antiseptic |
| counter- | against, opposite | counteract, counterclaim |
| -less | without | harmless, restless, speechless |
| -ful / -ous | full of (builds the positive) | harmful, dangerous, famous |
Prefix knowledge works in both directions: meet irreversible, know it means reversible negated; need the opposite of conformity, answer nonconformity or defiance. Watch the four-way in- / im- / il- / ir- spelling split — it follows the next sound (impossible, illegal, irregular) and decides spelling questions as a bonus.
Antonym families to bank together: agree/disagree, appear/disappear, increase/decrease, superior/inferior, permanent/temporary, expand/contract, vacant/occupied, sacred/profane, native/foreign, optimist/pessimist. SSC antonyms usually come straight from these families.
Degree opposites: gradable pairs sit on one line — hot↔cold, abundant↔scarce, shallow↔deep. Complementary pairs allow no middle — alive↔dead, guilty↔innocent. Both types appear; recognising the type prevents choosing a merely-different word.
What 'most opposite' really asks
An antonym question gives a word and asks for the option furthest from it in meaning. Two words can both be unrelated to the stem; only one is its true opposite. Your job is to recognise which kind of opposite the exam wants.
Three kinds of opposite
- Complementary — one or the other, nothing between: alive / dead, present / absent, accept / refuse.
- Gradable — two ends of a scale: hot / cold, maximum / minimum, abundant / scarce, minor / major.
- Direction or role — opposite movements or roles: buy / sell, ascend / descend, employer / employee, immigrate / emigrate.
Before looking at the options, decide the kind: it stops you from choosing a merely different word.
The synonym trap
Every antonym question also carries at least one synonym of the stem among the options. For SUPERFLUOUS (more than needed), the options include extra and surplus — both mean the same as the stem. Learn to laugh at them: in an antonym question, a synonym option is always wrong. This one observation usually removes two of the four options immediately.
Keep the part of speech
The opposite should be usable in the same slot: the opposite of the adjective TRANSPARENT is the adjective opaque, not the noun 'opacity'. If two options both fit the meaning, prefer the one matching the part of speech.
Do not confuse opposite with absence
The opposite must reverse the meaning, not merely remove it:
- For GENEROUS, 'careful' is not enough; the reverse idea is mean or stingy.
- For BRAVE, 'calm' is not the opposite; cowardly is. Ask: does this option describe the other end of the same scale, or just a different street?
Question types you will see
Each type: how to recognise it, the method step by step, and one question to try.
True opposite on the same scale
The stem and the right answer sit at the two ends of one scale; two options are unrelated words.
Name the scale the stem lives on (quantity, size, temperature, willingness).
Name the other end of the scale in plain words.
Pick the option that sits at that other end.
Why it works: antonyms are scale-mates, so fixing the scale fixes the answer.
Most opposite to SCARCE
Show solutionHide solution
Scale = quantity. Other end = plenty → plentiful.
Prefix-flip false antonym
One option is built by flipping a prefix (flammable, valuable) and looks like the opposite of the stem.
Recall the stem's real meaning from memory, not from its shape.
Check the false-flip list (invaluable, inflammable, disinterested, restive).
Choose the option that genuinely reverses that meaning.
Why it works: these words are planted exactly because their shape lies.
Most opposite to INVALUABLE
Show solutionHide solution
Invaluable = extremely valuable → opposite worthless. 'Valuable' is the shape trap.
Strike the synonyms first
Two or three options mean the same as the stem (extra, surplus, spare for superfluous).
In an antonym question, delete every option that means the same as the stem.
What remains is usually one true opposite plus one unrelated word.
Choose the one on the same scale.
Why it works: examiners always seed synonym decoys; removing them halves the work.
Most opposite to SUPERFLUOUS
Show solutionHide solution
Extra and surplus are synonyms → strike both → essential remains.
Opposite with matching part of speech
Two options carry opposite ideas but different forms (opaque vs opacity; optimistic vs optimism).
Fix the stem's part of speech.
Prefer the opposite that shares it.
Only fall back to the other form if nothing matches.
Why it works: the replaced word must fit the same sentence slot.
Most opposite to ASCEND
Show solutionHide solution
Verb → descend. Rise and climb are synonyms; they fail the meaning check first anyway.
Shortcuts that save time
Put the word and each candidate in the same short sentence ('The manager praised / criticised the report'). The option producing a genuine contradiction is the antonym.
Antonym of CORDIAL: warm / polite / hostile / sincere.
Show solutionHide solution
'A cordial welcome' ↔ 'a hostile welcome' — real opposites. 'Polite' and 'sincere' can coexist with cordial, so neither contradicts it.
Before scanning options, guess the flip yourself (conformity → nonconformity). If your guess is among the options, mark it — the options are built around the same flip.
Kill options that merely lack the quality ('careful' for 'brave'). An antonym fights the word; it does not stand beside it.
Mistakes to avoid
Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.
Choosing a word from a different part of speech ('arrive' as antonym of 'departure').
Taking a near-neutral word ('polite') as the opposite of a warm word ('cordial').
Missing spelled-out flips: irrational, illogical, immature all = 'not + word'.
Opposing the wrong sense of a polysemous word ('fresh' = new vs unwilted; SSC picks the listed sense).
Quick revision
Read this the night before the exam.
Three kinds: complementary, gradable, direction/role.
Never flip the prefix: invaluable = very valuable; inflammable = burns easily.
A synonym in the options is always wrong here — strike it out first.
Match the part of speech of the stem.
The opposite must reverse the idea, not drop it.
