Two halves of one age

The Vedic age (c. 1500–600 BCE) is named after the Vedas, our main source. It has two phases.

  • Early (Rigvedic) Vedic, c. 1500–1000 BCE: people lived in the Sapta Sindhu (land of seven rivers — Punjab and beyond). Life was pastoral; cattle were the main wealth, and the word for war (gavishthi, 'search for cows') shows it. Pottery: ochre-coloured and then plain grey.
  • Later Vedic, c. 1000–600 BCE: people moved into the Ganga–Yamuna doab. Iron (shyama ayas / krishna ayas, 'dark metal') appears and agriculture expands. Pottery: Painted Grey Ware (PGW). Kingdoms replace tribes, and the varna system hardens.

The Rigveda is the oldest text of the Indo-European world still in use as scripture. Each Veda has attached texts: the Brahmanas (ritual prose — Aitareya with the Rigveda, Shatapatha with the Yajurveda), then Aranyakas (forest teachings) and finally the Upanishads (philosophy, also called Vedanta). The six limbs of the Vedas (Vedangas) are Shiksha, Kalpa, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chhanda and Jyotisha.

03

Rigveda anchors

Exams love four mandalas: III, VII, IX, X.

  • Mandala III — the Gayatri Mantra, addressed to Savitri, composed by Vishwamitra.
  • Mandala VII — the Battle of Ten Kings (Dasarajna) on the river Parushni (Ravi); Sudas, chief of the Bharatas, won.
  • Mandala IX — entirely devoted to Soma.
  • Mandala X — the Purusha Sukta, which first mentions the four varnas (Brahmin from the mouth, Kshatriya from arms, Vaishya from thighs, Shudra from feet).

Indra is praised in the most hymns (about 250; Purandara, 'fort-breaker'), then Agni (about 200), the messenger god; Varuna upholds rita, the cosmic order. The Sindhu is the most-mentioned river, but the Saraswati is called the holiest (naditama).

07

Question types you will see

Each type: how to recognise it, the method step by step, and one question to try.

Type 1very common2 practice Q

Veda ↔ priest / upaveda / content

How to spot it:

'Which Veda is called…', 'the priest who recites the Samaveda', 'Dhanurveda is attached to which Veda'.

Method
  1. Recall the four Vedas with their priests: Rig-Hotri, Sama-Udgatri, Yajur-Adhvaryu, Atharva-Brahma.

  2. Upavedas: Ayurveda-Rig, Gandharvaveda-Sama, Dhanurveda-Yajur, Shilpaveda-Atharva.

  3. Trap: the Atharvaveda is the 'Veda of magical formulas', and is the latest addition to the Vedic corpus.

Try this

Which Veda is partly in prose and partly in verse, and contains sacrificial formulas?

Show solution

The Yajurveda — its Shukla (white) and Krishna (black) recensions mix verse and prose ritual formulas.

Type 2very common3 practice Q

Rigveda mandala ↔ content; deities of hymns

How to spot it:

Gayatri Mantra, Battle of Ten Kings, Soma, Purusha Sukta, 'maximum hymns to which god'.

Method
  1. Anchor mandalas: 3 = Gayatri (Vishwamitra, to Savitri), 7 = Battle of Ten Kings, 9 = Soma, 10 = Purusha Sukta (four varnas).

  2. Hymn counts: Indra most (~250), Agni next (~200), Varuna guards rita.

  3. Dasarajna details: river Parushni (Ravi), winner Sudas of the Bharatas.

Try this

The Gayatri Mantra of the Rigveda was composed by —

Show solution

Rishi Vishwamitra; it occurs in Mandala III and is addressed to Savitri (the solar deity).

Type 3common2 practice Q

Rigvedic river ↔ modern name

How to spot it:

A Rigvedic river name (Vitasta, Asikni, Parushni, Vipas, Sutudri) with modern rivers as options, or the reverse.

Method
  1. Learn the west-to-east chain: Vitasta-Jhelum, Asikni-Chenab, Parushni-Ravi, Vipas-Beas, Sutudri-Sutlej.

  2. Order trick: the Rigvedic names run in the same order as the modern J-C-R-B-S.

  3. Extras: Kubha = Kabul, Krumu = Kurram, Drishadvati = Ghaggar-Chautang.

Try this

The Rigvedic river Vitasta is known today as —

Show solution

The Jhelum. Vitasta is still the Kashmiri name of the Jhelum (Vyeth).

Type 4common2 practice Q

Early vs Later Vedic life and polity terms

How to spot it:

Statement comparisons (early vs later Vedic) or single-term questions on Bali, Vidatha, sabha-samiti, iron, PGW.

Method
  1. Direction of change: pastoral → agricultural; Sapta Sindhu → doab; assemblies weaken → kings strengthen; Bali voluntary → regular tax.

  2. Terms: Vidatha = oldest assembly; Bali = tribute; Bhagadugha = tax collector; Gramani = village head.

  3. Iron in Later Vedic = shyama/krishna ayas; pottery = Painted Grey Ware.

Try this

In the Rigvedic period, Bali was —

Show solution

A voluntary tribute offered by the people to the chief; only in Later Vedic times did it become a regular tax.

Type 5common3 practice Q

Upanishad ↔ content; darshana ↔ founder

How to spot it:

'Satyameva Jayate is taken from', 'the founder of the Nyaya school', 'Nachiketa appears in'.

Method
  1. Upanishad anchors: Mundaka = 'Satyameva Jayate'; Katha = Nachiketa-Yama; Brihadaranyaka = oldest, Gargi-Yajnavalkya; Chandogya = Krishna Devaki-putra mention.

  2. Darshana founders: Sankhya-Kapila, Yoga-Patanjali, Nyaya-Gautama, Vaisheshika-Kanada, Mimamsa-Jaimini, Vedanta-Badarayana.

  3. All six schools accept Vedic authority — that is what 'orthodox (astika)' means.

Try this

The philosophical school of Vaisheshika, known for its atomic theory, was founded by —

Show solution

Kanada (also called Uluka). The Nyaya school of logic was founded by Gautama (Akshapada).

08

Shortcuts that save time

⚡ Punjab rivers west→east: "Very Angry Parrots Visit Sutlej"

Vitasta = Jhelum → Asikni = Chenab → Parushni = Ravi → Vipas = Beas → Sutudri = Sutlej. Same order as the modern J-C-R-B-S.

Example

The Rigvedic river Asikni is today's —

Show solution

Second in the chain (V-A-P-V-S ↔ J-C-R-B-S) → Chenab.

⚡ Veda → priest: "Rig-Hotri, Sama-Udgatri, Yajur-Adhvaryu, Atharva-Brahma"

Think HUAB: Hotri recites, Udgatri sings, Adhvaryu performs, Brahma supervises.

⚡ Rigveda mandala anchors: 3-7-9-10

3 = Gayatri, 7 = Ten Kings war, 9 = Soma, 10 = Purusha Sukta (varnas).

09

Mistakes to avoid

Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.

Mistake 01

Gayatri Mantra is addressed to Savitri (sun deity), not to Gayatri as a goddess; it is in Mandala III.

Mistake 02

'Satyameva Jayate' is from the Mundaka Upanishad, not from the Rigveda.

Mistake 03

Most mentioned river = Sindhu; most sacred = Saraswati. Different answers.

Mistake 04

Iron appears only in the Later Vedic period.

10
