Two drainage systems
Himalayan rivers are perennial (snow-fed), long, and cut deep gorges; peninsular rivers are mostly rain-fed and seasonal. East-flowing peninsular rivers build deltas; west-flowing ones (Narmada, Tapi) enter the sea through estuaries.
The Indus system (rivers of Punjab)
The Indus rises near Lake Mansarovar (Tibet) and flows through Ladakh into Pakistan. Its five tributaries: Jhelum (rises at Verinag spring, flows through Srinagar and Wular lake), Chenab (formed where the Chandra and Bhaga meet at Tandi in Himachal Pradesh), Ravi, Beas (rises at Beas Kund near Rohtang; joins the Sutlej at Harike), and Sutlej (rises at Rakas Tal; enters India at Shipki La; the Bhakra Nangal dam stands on it). The Indus Waters Treaty (1960) gave India the three eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and Pakistan the three western ones.
The Ganga system
The Ganga is formed when the Bhagirathi (from the Gangotri glacier, emerging at Gaumukh) meets the Alaknanda at Devprayag. It is the longest river of India (about 2,525 km) and leaves the Himalayas at Haridwar. The Panch Prayag (confluences on the Alaknanda, upstream to downstream): Vishnuprayag (Dhauliganga), Nandprayag (Nandakini), Karnaprayag (Pindar), Rudraprayag (Mandakini), Devprayag (Bhagirathi). Main tributaries: Yamuna (from Yamunotri; the longest tributary; joins at Prayagraj) with the Chambal, Sind, Betwa and Ken; left-bank Ganga tributaries Ramganga, Gomti (Lucknow stands on it), Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi ("Sorrow of Bihar") and Mahananda; the Son (rises at Amarkantak) joins on the right. The Damodar ("Sorrow of Bengal") feeds the Hugli. The Ganga-Brahmaputra Sundarbans delta is the world's largest delta.
The Brahmaputra
Rises near Mansarovar (Chemayungdung glacier) as the Tsangpo in Tibet, enters Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang/Dihang, and in Assam carries the hugest volume of any Indian river. Majuli (Assam) on it is the largest river island in the world.

| Mahanadi | Sihawa, Chhattisgarh | Hirakud dam; tributaries Seonath, Hasdeo |
| Narmada | Amarkantak | Flows west in a rift valley to the Gulf of Khambhat; Dhuandhar falls at Bhedaghat; tributary Tawa |

Shivanasamudra (Kaveri) hosted one of Asia's earliest hydro-electric stations (1902). The Indira Gandhi Canal carries Sutlej-Beas water deep into Rajasthan.
Question types you will see
Each type: how to recognise it, the method step by step, and one question to try.
River ↔ source (origin point)
'Which river rises at Amarkantak / Trimbakeshwar / Talakaveri?', or a river with places as options.
Peninsular sources: Godavari - Trimbakeshwar; Krishna - near Mahabaleshwar; Kaveri - Talakaveri; Mahanadi - Sihawa; Narmada and Son - Amarkantak; Tapi - Multai.
Himalayan: Ganga (Bhagirathi) - Gangotri/Gaumukh; Yamuna - Yamunotri; Indus and Brahmaputra - near Mansarovar; Sutlej - Rakas Tal; Beas - Beas Kund.
Amarkantak is the favourite: it feeds both a west-flowing (Narmada) and a north-flowing (Son) river.
The Mahanadi rises in which state?
Show solutionHide solution
Chhattisgarh - near Sihawa (Dhamtari district). It flows east through Odisha into the Bay of Bengal.
Confluences and tributaries
'X and Y meet at…', 'Which is a tributary of…', 'Which is a right-bank tributary', Panch Prayag questions.
Panch Prayag on the Alaknanda (upstream to downstream): Vishnu (Dhauliganga), Nand (Nandakini), Karna (Pindar), Rudra (Mandakini), Dev (Bhagirathi) - 'Very Nice Kids Read Daily'.
Other meeting points: Beas-Sutlej at Harike; Ganga-Yamuna at Prayagraj; Chandra-Bhaga at Tandi.

North: Tehri - Bhagirathi; Bhakra Nangal - Sutlej; Farakka barrage - Ganga.
Peninsula: Hirakud - Mahanadi; Sardar Sarovar - Narmada; Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam - Krishna; Mettur and KRS - Kaveri; Idukki - Periyar.
Superlatives: Tehri tallest; Hirakud longest earthen dam.
The Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam near Mysuru is on which river?
Show solutionHide solution
The Kaveri. Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu is on the same river.
Waterfall ↔ river
A named waterfall (Jog, Chitrakote, Dhuandhar, Dudhsagar, Athirappilly, Shivanasamudra) with rivers as options.
Karnataka: Jog - Sharavati; Shivanasamudra - Kaveri.
Central India: Chitrakote - Indravati (Chhattisgarh); Dhuandhar - Narmada (Bhedaghat, Jabalpur).

'Sorrow of Bihar/Bengal', 'Dakshin Ganga', 'largest river island', 'forms an estuary', 'crosses the Tropic twice'.
Nicknames: Kosi - Sorrow of Bihar; Damodar - Sorrow of Bengal; Godavari - Dakshin Ganga.
Firsts: Ganga longest river of India; Yamuna longest tributary; Majuli (Brahmaputra) largest river island; Sundarbans largest delta.
Narmada and Tapi flow west in rift valleys and form estuaries, not deltas; the Mahi crosses the Tropic of Cancer twice.
Which river is called the 'Sorrow of Bengal'?

The Damodar - it used to flood the plains of West Bengal; the Damodar Valley Corporation (1948) was set up to control it.
Shortcuts that save time
Vishnuprayag → Nandprayag → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Devprayag (upstream to downstream). At Devprayag the river becomes the Ganga.

Mistakes to avoid
Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.
Calling the Godavari India's longest river — it is the longest peninsular river; the Ganga is the longest overall.
Saying the Narmada rises in the Western Ghats — it rises at Amarkantak (MP) and flows west.
Putting Tehri on the Alaknanda — it is on the Bhagirathi.
