The flag

Designed on the lines suggested by Pingali Venkayya; adopted on 22 July 1947; ratio 3 : 2; a navy-blue 24-spoke Ashoka Chakra at the centre (taken from the Sarnath Lion Capital). Saffron - courage and sacrifice; white - truth and peace; green - faith and prosperity. The Flag Code of India was liberalised in 2002 (and further in 2021) to let the public hoist the flag.

Emblem, anthem and song

State Emblem: adapted from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath, adopted on 26 January 1950; motto Satyameva Jayate ('truth alone triumphs'), from the Mundaka Upanishad. National anthem - Jana Gana Mana by Tagore, adopted 24 January 1950 (playing time about 52 seconds). National song - Vande Mataram by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (from Anandamath), first sung at the 1896 Congress session.
